Melissa Hartwig’s Dedication to Lifelong Learning Earns Vocational Student of the Year Nomination

With a passion for helping others and a deep commitment to personal growth, Melissa Hartwig has built a career defined by adaptability, resilience, and compassion.

Now, her efforts are being recognised with a Vocational Student of the Year nomination at the NSW Regional Training Awards.

A Pathway built on experience

Melissa’s journey to study at Riverina Community College (RCC) was inspired by a colleague who recognised her drive and ability to succeed across different modes of learning.

“This course is the latest chapter in a diverse working life,” Melissa shared. “I’ve previously completed qualifications in Hospitality and Retail, and now I’ve added Aged Care to that list. Each course, whether through TAFE, internal RTOs, or now RCC, has given me different perspectives and methods of learning. That variety has motivated me to continue growing in this field.”

Support that made the difference

Melissa’s experience at RCC stood out for its structure and trainer support.

“RCC was great in setting clear completion goals,” she said. “The trainers really worked with me to meet those goals, providing feedback, resources, and consistent encouragement. What helped most was the regular Zoom sessions, not just for the course content but also for check-ins to complete third-party reports. That personal connection kept me on track.”

Despite balancing work and study, Melissa remained focused, thanks to the guidance she received.

“My biggest challenge was staying consistent with completing set work, but the support from my trainer made it achievable. Their encouragement really pushed me through.”

Growth beyond the certificate

Completing her Certificate IV in Aged Care has not only fulfilled a work requirement, but also opened new doors for Melissa.

“The course gave me deeper knowledge in the field I’m already working in, but more than that, it gave me confidence,” she explained. “I’m now interested in exploring areas like wound management and physiology. I’ve grown more confident in applying what I’ve learned and sharing that knowledge with my colleagues.”

Overcoming challenges, celebrating milestones

Melissa also highlighted the balance between the challenges she faced and the milestones she achieved.

“Some subjects weren’t in my comfort zone, but RCC’s trainers helped me get through them. Whether it was rephrasing content or providing positive feedback, they made sure I understood and could move forward.”

Looking back, Melissa is proud of how her studies have shaped her skills, outlook, and future.

Words of encouragement

Melissa encourages others to consider RCC as a training provider of choice.

“I’d absolutely recommend RCC. Their trainers are professional, supportive, and adaptable. They guide you from day one right through to the finish line.”

With a well-earned nomination and a renewed sense of purpose in the aged care sector, Melissa’s story is a testament to the power of lifelong learning—and the value of being supported every step of the way.

The NSW Regional Training Awards ceremony will be held at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre this Thursday, 19 June 2025, and the entire RCC team wishes Melissa the very best of luck as she represents our college and the aged care sector with pride.
