From Stay-at-Home Mum to Student Success: Indyennah Rooke Nominated for Indigenous Student of the Year

When opportunity knocked, Indyennah Rooke opened the door to a new chapter, and now she’s being recognised in a big way.

The Riverina Community College (RCC) student has been nominated as Indigenous Student of the Year at the NSW Regional Training Awards, and it’s easy to see why.

Finding her passion

“I’ve always wanted to work in the beauty industry,” Indyennah shared. “I started the Certificate III in Beauty Therapy when I was younger, but life got in the way. So when the opportunity came up again through RCC, I jumped at it.”

A proud mum of two, Indyennah had spent the past few years as a full-time carer for her children. With the support of her village, including her partner, siblings, parents, and close family friends, she was able to return to study and pursue her dream.

A supportive learning journey

From day one, RCC provided the supportive environment Indyennah needed to succeed.

“The staff were amazing, so kind and understanding,” she said. “As a single mum, there were times I couldn’t make it to class or had to leave early. The trainers were flexible and always made sure I didn’t fall behind.”

She especially appreciated the hands-on learning and the encouragement she received when things felt overwhelming. “Whenever I was unsure, the trainers would step in with demonstrations and extra support. That made a huge difference.”

Confidence, skills, and purpose

Since completing her Certificate III, Indyennah has gone on to finish a Diploma in Beauty Therapy, gaining even more skills and confidence along the way. She’s applied for jobs in the beauty industry, including an interview with Ella Baché, and while scheduling hasn’t aligned just yet, she’s hopeful about future opportunities.

“The biggest change in me is my confidence,” she said. “When I first started the course, I was really anxious. Meeting new people and working with clients felt daunting, but now I feel more social, more capable, and proud of what I can do.”

One of her most meaningful memories was seeing the impact of her work on real clients.

“When we started doing treatments, it was so rewarding. Seeing the joy and confidence clients had after a session made me feel like I was truly making a difference.”

Words of encouragement

For others thinking about studying at RCC, Indyennah has one simple message:

“Go for it. You have to start somewhere. Build your confidence and take the leap. RCC will support you all the way.”

With a nomination for Indigenous Student of the Year under her belt and a bright future ahead, Indyennah’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to follow your passion. With the right support, anything is possible.

The NSW Regional Training Awards ceremony will be held at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre this Thursday, 19 June 2025, and the entire RCC team wishes Indyennah the very best of luck as she represents our college and the beauty industry with pride.
